GRE tunnels move routed IP traffic over the network you already have.

GRE, for Generic Routing Encapsulation, creates a point-to-point tunnel between your infrastructure and Taipan Transit. It wraps IPv4 or IPv6 packets inside another IP packet, letting routed prefixes cross an existing connection while the machines behind the tunnel keep working normally.

For homelabs and hosting operators, that means you can receive IP resources, route traffic to your own machines, and keep the physical network underneath simple.

GRE is useful when you want the routing layer from Taipan Transit, but you keep control of where the traffic lands. The tunnel endpoint can sit on your router, a gateway server, or the edge of a small hosting platform.

A lightweight tunnel for fast packet forwarding.

GRE keeps traffic clear inside the tunnel, which keeps packet handling simple. The endpoint does not spend resources transforming every payload, so routers, gateways and virtualized hosts can use more of their available capacity for forwarding traffic.

That lower processing cost helps maintain higher throughput and lower latency, especially when the tunnel is carrying real hosting traffic rather than occasional management access.
